5Corticosteroid Injections
Your doctor might recommend injecting a corticosteroid medication like cortisone into the hand’s base or wrist to alleviate the inflammation, pain, and other signs of carpal tunnel. Corticosteroids are quick-acting and potent drugs which could relieve swelling in the wrist and reduce stress on the median nerves. You can also take steroids orally, but it isn’t as effective as the injecting, plus its side effects can be more pronounced. Some other common steroid drugs used for the syndrome are triamcinolone, prednisolone, and dexamethasone. However, there might be some possible side effects such as nerve damage, muscle atrophy, tendon weakening, excessive bleeding, and local infection.
