Aspiration pneumonia occurs when you breathe a foreign substance into the lungs. This is more common with beverages or food. When you swallow, drink or food would go wrongly into the lungs instead of the stomach. This leads to the introduction of bacteria and causes bacterial pneumonia. Some people would also breathe in chemicals that could be damaging to the lungs. This type can be caused by common chemicals in the household, such as smoke, fertilizer, and chlorine. Depending on the cause, there are many treatment options for aspiration pneumonia. If left untreated, it would result in chronic lung issues.
