5 Types of Pneumonia that You Should Know

Pneumonia is an infectious disease that leads to inflamed air sacs in the lungs. As a result, the air sacs would fill with pus or fluid, making you cough with pus or phlegm. Other typical symptoms include difficulty breathing, chills, and fever. Different organisms could cause pneumonia, including fungi, viruses, and bacteria. Below are 5 types of pneumonia that you should know.

1Bacterial Pneumonia

Bacterial infection may cause pneumonia. This type tends to develop on its own or after viral pneumonia. Common triggers include:

– Streptococcus pneumonia bacteria is the most common trigger of bacterial pneumonia

– Legionella pneumophila bacteria can be found in cooling towers, plumbing systems, or hot tubs

– Haemophilus influenza bacteria tends to affect people with existing lung issues, such as COPD and cystic fibrosis

– Chlamydia pneumonia bacteria tends to trigger mild cases of pneumonia, often in those older than 40 years old

– Mycoplasma pneumonia bacteria is prevalent in crowded areas, such as prisons or dormitories

The first treatment option for bacterial pneumonia is antibiotics, such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, or azithromycin. In some cases, this type would lead to more serious complications, such as septic shock. [1]
