13Speech Difficulty
Speech disorders are quite common in multiple sclerosis. Your speech patterns are basically controlled by the brainstem, an essential area in your cognitive system. When you suffer from this disorder, it will damage some nerves in this part and cause some changes in this ability. The symptom can range from mild difficulties to serious issues which make it hard to speak normally. Also, you can slur words due to incoordination or weakness of your mouth, cheeks, lips, and tongue. Other issue includes nasal speech, which causes sounds as if you had a nasal obstruction or cold.
