10Dementia
Dementia can occur in the final stages of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, studies have shown that this is not very common because ALS causes nerve and muscle deterioration while still allowing for normal cognitive functions like thinking and communicating. The risk of dementia increases with age and ALS can only increase this risk. Not all ALS patients will experience dementia, but for people that experience it, it affects the ability to speak; usually, it leads to confusion, and ultimately it causes forgetfulness. A low percentage of ALS patients, however, experiences this symptom. [8]
