5Pregnancy Problems
The risk of an iodine deficiency is higher in pregnant women. The reason is that their daily recommended intakes are much higher to meet the body needs for them and the baby. Demands keep increasing throughout lactation when newborn babies take in iodine from breast milk. A deficiency of iodine in these periods may lead to several potential side effects. In mothers, some signs of an underactive thyroid include feeling cold, fatigue, weakness, or a goiter. In infants, brain development and physical growth can be affected. Even worse, a serious deficiency would increase the risk of stillbirth in pregnant women. [7]
