3Causes Of Choledocholithiasis
The cause of choledocholithiasis can vary, depending on the type you have.
Cholesterol gallstones are the most common form. They are caused when bile contains too much bilirubin, too much cholesterol, or not sufficient bile salts. Another possible cause is when the gallbladder doesn’t empty often enough or fully.
The exact cause of pigment gallstones is still unclear. However, the risk tends to be higher in those with biliary tract infections, cirrhosis of the liver, as well as inherited blood issues that force the liver to produce excess bilirubin.[3]
