5Stigma and Assault, Healthcare Access
The risk of experiencing sexual assault and stigma is probably higher when people decide to come out as transgender. Many people report sexual, physical, and verbal harassment at work, school, and other places. The appearance of transgender individuals would impact the level of cissexism. Studies have shown that those who do not follow the traditional gender system would be more discriminated and have worse healthcare access than others. [7]
Some scientists claim that if medical schools do not provide sufficient information on the matter of LGBTQIA+, healthcare providers may not provide sensitive and competent care to people from this community. As a result, transgender people may have less access to the healthcare system. This makes them pay more money for the same services, travel further to get proper care, or cannot purchase suitable insurance plans. Some transgenders even report violence or harassment in medical facilities or encounter a refusal to care from healthcare providers. Another problem is the use of improper or outdated language, which makes people in the trans community feel hostile or uncomfortable. [8]
