Ways to Maintain Good Eye Sights

6Get Regular Eye Checks

Get regular eye checks could prevent some eye diseases and ensures an early treatment for the best effect. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children should get vision screenings for eye vision and eye alignment at least once between three years old and five years old. People with diabetes should be examined every year. The high-risk group must go to see an ophthalmologist and do a dilated eye exam every two years. These people include:

  • People over 60 years old
  • People with a family history of glaucoma. [5]

Avoid Smoking

Smoking not only negatively affects your lungs but also harms many other organs, including the eyes. Accumulated evidence shows that smoking tobacco brings forward the onset of cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), dry eyes, uveitis, diabetic retinopathy, etc. In severe cases, smoking could lead to vision loss or blindness. When people inhale tobacco smoke, a compound made up of many toxic chemicals, it hardens the blood vessels of your eyes and causes oxidative stress. Besides, smoking encourages inflammation. The soft tissues and muscles get swollen, and your eyeballs would bulge out. Last but not least, long-time exposure to cigarette smoke irritates your eyes, making your eyes itchy, stinging, red, and dry. [6]
