Understanding Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)

4Is a Health Savings Account the Right Option for You?

As listed in previous sections, a health-saving account has many pros and cons. Whether it is the right option for you may depend on certain factors, especially your healthcare plan and budget for medical costs. If you are basically healthy and want to save for healthcare expenses in the future, a health savings account can be a good choice. The same holds true for those people who are going to retire soon as the money in the account can help you compensate for the expenses after retirement. In contrast, if you find it difficult to set aside the money or think that you need costly medical care in the coming year, then it is better to choose another option rather than a health savings account. Who Can Open a Health Savings Account?

You may set up your own health savings account through a financial institution or a bank. It can also be provided by an employer with high-deductible health plans. To be qualified for this option, you need to be under 65 years old and have a high-deductible health insurance plan. If your spouse is using your insurance as her or his secondary coverage, then she or he must have a high-deductible plan as well. Keep in mind that the high-deductible plan should be the only health insurance you have. Nevertheless, you can still have long-term care, disability, vision, and dental insurance. [6]
