5Metabolic Disorders
Scientists have found that certain metabolic disorders would increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 5 times in comparison with those who do not have these conditions. These may include:
– Hyperglycemia: Characterized by levels of blood sugar higher than 125 mg/dL during fasting
– Hypertension: Characterized by a diastolic blood pressure result higher than 80 or a systolic blood pressure result higher than 130
– Abdominal obesity: Characterized by a waist circumference of more than 40 inches and 30 inches, in men and women respectively
– Hypertriglyceridemia: Characterized by levels of blood triglyceride higher than 200 mg/dL during fasting
– Low levels of HDL: Characterized by levels of HDL cholesterol lower than 40 mg/dL [8]
