When the kidneys do not work properly or when you have kidney issues, there may be too much salt in the blood. This leads to the retention of water, which would cause swollen feet and ankles. Possible signs include poor appetite, trouble focusing, reduced energy, weakness, tiredness, trouble sleeping, puffy eyes, muscle cramps and twitches, high blood pressure, shortness of breath, chest pain, vomiting, nausea, increased urination, and dry or itchy skin. There are many treatment options available, such as diuretic medications, high blood pressure drugs, low-protein diet, anemia medications, cholesterol-reducing medications, and vitamin D or calcium supplements.
