Prozac for Anxiety: Dosage, Side Effects, Interactions & More

4Prozac Dependence and Withdrawal

There is currently no clinical trial on the risk of Prozac dependence, which means the body depends on the medication’s effect to function properly. However, stopping this treatment suddenly would lead to withdrawal symptoms. These include irritability, dizziness, electric shock feelings, headache, mood changes, confusion, anxiety, insomnia, uneasy feelings, and agitation. That’s why you should not stop taking Prozac abruptly. To reduce the risk, your doctor will suggest a timeline to help your body adjusts to changes in Prozac dosage. [7]

Possible Drug Interactions

Prozac may interact with other OTC or prescribed medications, supplements, herbs, and vitamins. These include:

– Pimozide: Taking this medication with Prozac would increase your heart rate.

– Thioridazine: Similar problem like pimozide.

– MAO inhibitors: Taking Prozac with these drugs would lead to severe side effects, such as loss of consciousness, unusual heart rates, changes in blood pressure, and high fever.

In addition, Prozac may interact with lithium, benzodiazepines, opioids, antidepressant medications, amphetamines, St. John’s wort, anticonvulsant medications, NSAIDs, aspirin, or warfarin. This is not a complete list, so make sure to talk with your doctor to avoid these interactions. [8]
