Medicare Eligibility with a Disability

4Medicare for Children with Disabilities

Coverage for Medicare does not apply to dependents. Therefore, they should individually qualify to get these benefits. According to Medicare, children are defined as unmarried individuals under 22 years old or individuals from 22 to 26 years old with certain requirements. Children under 20 years old can be eligible for Medicare only when they have end-stage renal disease. In these cases, they must have one of the parents who qualify for retirement benefits of Social Security, or they must need a kidney transplant or regular dialysis treatments. [5]

How to Enroll in Medicare with a Disability

To enroll in Medicare with a disability, you first need to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance. Some standards set by the Social Security Administration should be met. In general, you may be not able to work and the disease is expected to last for more than 12 months. Once your application has been approved, you will be automatically eligible for Medicare benefits, including Part A and Part B, after a waiting period of 24 months. You will get the Medicare card during the 22nd month of getting Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. [6]
