Mastectomy – What You Need to Know

5Recovery from a Mastectomy

After a mastectomy, you may need to stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 nights before coming home. Your doctor will provide specific instructions to:

– Care for the drain and surgical area

– Take medications, such as antibiotics or painkillers to manage discomfort and prevent infections

– Avoid some physical activities

– Attend follow-up appointments

– Do some arm exercises at home or under the guidance of physical therapists

The recovery time can vary from person to person. It may be a bit longer when a mastectomy involves breast reconstruction. During this time, seek medical help immediately when you have chills, fever, persistent pain, swelling around the surgical site, bad odor or discharge, constipation, and other signs of infection or allergic reaction.
