5Withdrawal
The withdrawal method involves the removal of the penis from the vagina before the ejaculation. This may theoretically work, but there is still a risk of getting pregnant. If done properly, the effectiveness can be up to 96 percent. Nevertheless, studies have shown that more than 20 percent of couples using the withdrawal method would still experience pregnancy. For many people, it is not that easy to time and know when to withdraw the penis. This method also does not help with protection against sexually transmitted infections. [7]
Abstinence
Abstinence means people need to refrain from sexual activity. This eliminates all risks of sperm reaching the female’s vagina and fertilizing the egg. This birth control method is 100% effective at pregnancy and also reduces the risk of sexually transmitted infections. The main drawback is that it requires complete restriction on all sexual activities. However, many people find it challenging to stay abstinent for a long time. [8]
