How to Prevent Blood Clots

4Avoid Extended Periods of Sitting

While exercising regularly is important to prevent blood clots, it is not enough. You should avoid lie down or sit for an extended period of time. The typical sitting posture where your legs are flexed at the knee may especially put you at risk. During work, travelling, or bedrest, it is a good idea to take a 5-minute off and do some light activities. This allows blood in the body to flow properly and avoid clots. You could just do some stretches or walk around. [5]

Stop Smoking

Smoking is a risk factor for developing blood clots. Tobacco products and e-cigarettes would make it more likely for platelet in the blood to stick together. Also, smoking might lead to inflammation in the blood vessels and damage their linings, which causes clots to form more easily. The risk is especially higher in those women who are taking hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills or are pregnant. Therefore, it is better to quit smoking to stay healthy and reduce the risk of many chronic diseases, including blood clots. [6]
