8Measuring Pupillary Distance by a Doctor
If you have no experience or want a precise measurement of the pupillary distance, then it is better to have it done by your eye doctor. Firstly, the doctor may do some test to check whether your prescription glasses are up to date. This would include examining the visual field, visual acuity, and eye muscles.
A doctor many use a digital pupillometer or an ocular measurement device to measure the size of the pupils. Both devices are handheld and can help determine the pupillary distance. A pupillometer is quite similar to a big pair of binoculars. You only have to look through its lenses and wait until the doctor finishes. An ocular measurement device looks like a digital camera.
After measuring the pupillary distance, your eye doctor may suggest a proper prescription for your eyeglasses. Compared to do-it-yourself methods above, a measurement by a doctor is more accurate and can help you choose the right fitted pair of glasses for your eyes. [9]
