5Types of Fibrinogen Deficiency
When results of a fibrinogen blood test are too low, it may indicate one of the three forms of fibrinogen deficiency. These include:
– Afibrinogenemia: This condition is characterized by no fibrinogen in the blood, which leads to serious bleeding. It is estimated to affect around 5 out of 10 million individuals.
– Hypofibrinogenemia: This type is characterized by abnormally low fibrinogen levels. The results typically show from 0.2 to 0.5 g/l. It is less common and less serious than afibrinogenemia.
– Dysfibrinogenemia: People with this condition have normal levels of fibrinogen. However, protein in their body does not work properly, which increases the risk of thrombosis or bleeding. This type can be acquired or congenital. [8]
