3Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Potassium-sparing diuretics are another type of diuresis. As the name implies, they encourage the kidneys to remove excessive sodium and fluids without potassium loss. These weak diuretics may affect the exchange of sodium and potassium. Thanks to the potassium-sparing effect, they can be safe for people with hypokalemia or low levels of potassium. Nevertheless, there may be a risk of high levels of potassium or hyperkalemia if they are taken with ACE inhibitors or other substances that retain potassium. You would use potassium-sparing diuretics alone or in combination with thiazide or loop diuretics. Common options include spironolactone, eplerenone, and triamterene. [4]
