It is estimated that up to millions of fungal species exist. However, only 3000 of these are known to result in disease. They can be found in any environment and condition, including on human skin, outdoors, and indoors. A fungal infection occurs when fungi overgrow. Fungi have a special structure: their cells consist of a nucleus and other elements protected by a thick cell wall and a membrane. This makes it hard to kill these microorganisms.
