Carrot Allergy – Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

5Diagnosis and Treatment

The moment you start having symptoms of the allergy (or shortly after), you would do best to consult your doctor. If your symptoms persist for a few days, it’s a prompt to visit your doctor immediately. Your doctor might prescribe antihistamines to help manage your symptoms. But first, a proper diagnosis would be carried out to ascertain the cause of your allergy.

The doctor might first look into your family history and assess your symptoms. They may run an allergy test by pricking your skin and placing a small amount of the allergen in the cut. This is called a scratch test. A positive result is indicated by reddish bumps on the pricked skin area. Next, the doctor may recommend keeping a food diary for several days to monitor the effect of certain foods. Then, the doctor can be sure if it’s a food allergy or not. [5]

The most common treatment for carrot allergy is to avoid contact with carrots. The doctor may prescribe antihistamines to ward off symptoms that might have developed already. In the rare case of those who present with anaphylaxis due to carrot allergy, immediate treatment is invaluable to their complete recovery from the symptoms. Treatment of anaphylaxis involves the use of epinephrine, oxygen supplements, intravenous injection of antihistamines or steroids, and medications to open up the airways. [6]
