Carrot Allergy – Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

3Symptoms

Symptoms of carrot allergy are no different from those of a typical food allergy. Sometimes it is instantaneous. At other times it takes up to hours to manifest. Eating carrots or handling them are the usual triggers of the symptoms. Occasionally, people with these allergies experience the same symptoms when they consume products with carrot extracts. Carrot allergy is related to the raw form of the food, rather than the cooked form. Eating cooked carrots rarely triggers an allergy in people who normally are allergic to carrots.

Carrot allergy symptoms are often mild, although some cases are quite severe. The severe symptoms are rare. In rarer cases, there’s the manifestation of anaphylaxis with most of its symptoms. If you have a mild case of allergy, you are likely to feel parts of your mouth swell when you eat carrots. Other mild symptoms of carrot allergy include itchy lips, tongue, throat, mouth or ears, and perhaps a scratchy feeling in your throat. Mild symptoms of the allergy do not necessarily require medication-based treatment, but rather avoiding the allergen is enough to alleviate the symptoms. [3]

Severe symptoms of carrot allergy might require treatment before they go away. They include coughing, congestion, hives, runny nose, sore throat, difficulty breathing, and sore throat. It can also occur with abdominal discomforts.
