6Blood Transfusion Procedure
A typical procedure for transfusing blood is straightforward and simple. A healthcare provider will use a hypodermic syringe to withdraw around 450 ml of blood from the arm vein of a donor. This amount of blood is passed to a collection bottle or bag through a plastic tube. Sodium citrate can be added to prevent blood clotting. To transfuse blood, blood can be passed to the recipient’s arm through a plastic tube thanks to gravity. It might take around 2 hours for this procedure to complete. The use of sterile needles, tubing, and containers is important to prevent stored or transfused blood from being exposed to microorganisms that would cause diseases. [6]
