You can take azithromycin to treat different forms of infections. These may include:

– Infections spread by ticks: Lyme disease and babesiosis

– Respiratory tract infections: whooping cough, pneumonia, bronchitis, Legionnaire’s disease, and mycobacterium avium complex

– Bacterial conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye

– Ear infections

– Infections of the skin or soft tissue

– Tonsillitis and pharyngitis

– Sexually transmitted infections: chancroid or chlamydia

Doctors may also prescribe azithromycin to prevent a heart infection in those having surgical procedures or prevent sexually transmitted infections in victims of sexual assault. In those people who are allergic to penicillin, azithromycin can be an alternative. An off-label use of this medication is to treat moderate to severe cases of acne. [3]
