5Treatment Options for Atypical Parkinsonism
There is currently no cure for atypical Parkinsonism. However, your doctor may prescribe some medications to help alleviate the symptoms. The exact treatment can vary, depending on the form of atypical Parkinsonism you have. For dementia with Lewy bodies, levodopa, quetiapine, and donepezil may help. Zolpidem and levodopa would be prescribed for people with progressive supranuclear palsy. Botulinum toxin injections can be another treatment to help relieve muscle twitching in the eyes. And last but not least, occupational and physical therapy may help improve muscle strength and balance in people with atypical Parkinsonism. [8]
How to Prevent Atypical Parkinsonism
It is not always possible to prevent both atypical Parkinsonism and Parkinson’s disease. However, you may try to avoid some risk factors, such as frequent brain injuries, frequent concussions, or exposure to harmful substances like pesticides, heavy metals, or carbon monoxide. For instance, you may wear a helmet to protect your head when riding a motorbike or bike or wear protective gear in working areas to reduce chemical exposures. [9]
