3Heat Therapy
While ice therapy can constrict blood vessels to alleviate inflammation, heat can increase blood flow and improve circulation to speed up healing. In fact, heat therapy is more effective in relieving pain caused by occipital neuralgia. You can apply a warm compress or an electric heating pad. High temperatures can dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow to your neck, thus relieving muscle tightness causing occipital neuralgia. Do it for around 15 minutes. The ideal temperature should be around 40 degrees for children and 50 degrees for adults. [3]
