There are millions of nephrons in each kidney. These small structures are the functional units that help filter blood and produce urine. Arterioles in these organs transport blood to a system of capillaries covered by a glomerulus. When blood flows through this capsule, most of the plasma in the blood is removed, thus allowing plasma and blood cells to keep flowing through capillaries. The water filtered in the capsule keeps flowing through a group of tubules. The cells around these tubules then absorb elements and water to return to the blood. Simultaneously, wastes are removed. In the end, the filtrate becomes urine, which only contains excess irons, waste products, and water. [7]
