Suicide Cases Are Increasing, Particularly in Rural Areas

According to a new report published in JAMA Network Open on Friday, the suicide rates are increasing quickly, particularly in rural areas of the United States.

Between 1999 and 2016, the ratios of suicide in Americans, ranging from 25 to 64 years old, went up to 41%. The rates in rural regions were approximately 25% higher than those in urban areas.

Three are many reasons for this difference. These include unemployment, low income, as well as poverty.

“Those factors are extremely terrible in rural counties,” said Danielle Steelsmith, the author of the study.

The report also suggested that areas with higher ratios of veterans and greater degrees of social fragmentation, determined by the number of transient residents, unmarried citizens, and single-person households, often had higher suicide rates. All of these cases were more common in rural areas.

To conduct the study, researchers had looked for a comprehensive data system from different sources, which includes information on all suicide deaths in the country. The records include gender, year of committing suicide, address, and age.

They found that there were more than 453,000 suicide cases in people from 25 to 64 between 1999 and 2016. The largest ratio happened in the last 3 years of the study. Nearly 80% of the cases were men, and more middle-aged people committed suicides than older and younger people.

Those states in the West are at higher risks. These include Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Missouri, Arkansas, West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky.

The surge in suicide rates in the United States is shocking. Two main factors, including unemployment and high rates of veterans, would seriously interact with each other.

If veterans come back to their towns without a job, they would lose hope in integrating with the civilian life. This transition is a period with a high risk of suicide. That’s why we need to help them find a job first. Some special campaigns like job training would aid in improving the current issue.

Suicide is currently one of the leading causes of death in the United States. It is also a serious public health issue.

In rural regions, many destructive social and health issues would interact. The lack of access to public health care in these areas would worsen the current situation. Many people there don’t have health insurance to cover all of the expenses.

However, social factors are also important. You would offer more medical services, but the rise isn’t going to decrease if these people cannot get out of poverty.
