6Pullups Versus Chinups: Main Differences
Chinups and pullups are two common bodyweight exercises that many people choose to improve the strength of their upper body. They both involve hanging the body on a horizontal bar with your grip and pulling up as high as possible. The final endpoint is when the chest’s top reaches the bar’s height. Due to these similarities, many people may use these words interchangeably. However, they are actually different exercises.
The main difference comes from the grip and how you hold the bar. In chin-ups, the grips should be narrower with a supinated grip, meaning that the palms should face the body. On the other hand, pullups use a pronated grip with palms facing away from the body. In addition, the hands should be wider apart than in chin-ups. This difference in grip leads to a difference in the difficulty and muscle activation between these two exercises. [7]
