Another common cause of blood in the saliva is gingivitis. Also known as periodontal disease, this is a prevalent gum condition that causes redness and swelling of the gums around the base of the teeth. The main cause is improper oral hygiene, which allows bacteria to cause an infection and inflammation in the gums. Other risk factors include a deficiency of vitamin C, hormone changes, leukemia, and some medications. If left untreated, gingivitis may lead to periodontitis, a more severe infection. To treat gingivitis, you need a professional dental cleaning accompanied by a good routine for oral hygiene. Surgery may be needed in more severe cases. [2]
