Why Is Ovarian Cancer So Hard to Diagnose?

5What Happens After an Ovarian Cancer Diagnosis

If a doctor cannot diagnose ovarian cancer, you may be referred to a gynecologic oncologist, who specializes in diagnosing and treating ovarian cancer. Some studies have shown that the help of these specialists may help increase overall survival rates in many people with the condition. In these cases, an oncologist would do additional tests to verify the presence of a tumor or determine whether it is cancerous. They can also help find out if the growth has spread to other parts of the body.  [7]

Is Regular Screening Necessary for Ovarian Cancer?

Screening tests are regularly done for breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, and other forms. However, this is not a standard for ovarian cancer. Some studies have found that those with an average risk of ovarian cancer who got a CA-125 and TVU blood test for screening may end up having unnecessary surgeries and testing. These procedures may also be expensive. In fact, this is one of the reasons why it is not common to have regular screening for ovarian cancer. [8]
