Adults with pre-diabetes and diabetes might have a higher level of insulin hormone. This can lead to excessive amounts of uric acid in your body, thus triggering some gout symptoms. Similarly, obesity and weight gain can have the same effect and worsen these issues. The more you weigh, the more difficult for your kidney to get rid of excess uric acid from the blood. Lastly, injuries to some joints, particularly the big toes could attract crystals of uric acid to the joints and cause gout. [9]
Just like many other diseases, gout can also be caused by many demographic factors such as gender, age, hormone, and heredity. If your parents or grandparents have gout, then it is highly likely that you will be diagnosed with this disease. Women are less likely than men to develop gout symptoms. In women, this condition often happens after menopause, while men from 30 to 50 years old often suffer from it. Gout is basically rare in young adults and children. [10]
