Why Do I Have Serratus Anterior Pain?

2Causes of Serratus Anterior Pain

Some common triggers of muscle pain include minor injuries, overuse, stress, and tension. Serratus anterior pain is more prevalent in people who play sports with repetitive movements. These include weightlifting, tennis, badminton, or swimming. The pain would also be caused by serratus anterior myofascial pain syndrome, which could be hard to diagnose. Some medical conditions may result in serratus anterior pain as well, such as asthma, ankylosing spondylitis, pleurisy, as well as broken or slipped rib. [3]

Risk Factors for Serratus Anterior Pain

In most cases, people with serratus anterior pain do not have to seek medical treatment. However, certain risk factors would indicate that you need to inform your healthcare provider immediately. These include trouble breathing, dizziness, pain that disrupts your daily tasks, unbreathable pain in the chest or back that does not improve with rest, bulls-eye rash, muscle pain, or high fever. Serratus anterior pain would spread to other body parts. This makes it quite hard to locate the exact area where the injury or pain originates. If your pain is serious, a doctor would suggest an MRI or X-ray scan for a precise diagnosis. [4]
