The main cause of Whipple’s disease is the Tropheryma whipplei bacterium. These bacteria affect the small’s intestine mucosal lining and cause small sores in its wall. Until now, scientists have not known much about the bacteria. While they seem present in the surrounding environment, it is still unclear where they originate and how they are spread to humans. Keep in mind that the condition does not occur in everyone carrying the bacteria. In fact, some genetic factors might make some people more prone to Whipple’s disease than others.
