What to Do When Ulcerative Colitis Flares

3Avoid Triggers

Certain drinks and foods may worsen symptoms of ulcerative colitis, particularly during a flare-up. Dairy products can be possible triggers. Try to reduce consumption or avoid ice cream, cheese, yogurt, milk, and other similar products in your diet. This would help prevent common issues with ulcerative colitis, such as gas, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. You should also avoid caffeine and alcohol as they may stimulate the bowels and worsen diarrhea. Instead, go for juices, herbal teas, or water. Last but not least, fatty foods may cause digestive stress and make it hard for the body to process foods. Thus, limit fried foods, high-fat products, cream-based causes, and fatty meats. [5]

Try Smaller Meals

If you have ulcerative colitis and often feel abdominal pain or have diarrhea after having large meals, try breaking them down. Instead of having 3 meals, try to have 5 or 6 smaller ones during the day. This can help reduce stress on the digestive system and improve the symptoms. If necessary, consult a dietitian to make the right plan and ensure your body still gets sufficient nutrients. [6]
