Scientists have not found out the exact cause of synovial sarcoma yet. However, there might be a genetic association. Indeed, most of the reported cases involve a specific genetic alternation in which elements of chromosome 18 and chromosome X switch their locations. What leads to this change is still unclear. Keep in mind that this is not a germinal mutation, but a somatic mutation. This means that the condition is not hereditary.
Some common risk factors for synovial sarcoma include exposure to radiation or chemical carcinogens and having inherited diseases like neurofibromatosis type 1 or Li-Fraumeni syndrome. People of all ages can be affected, but the condition is more common in young adults and teenagers.[2]
