What Is Psoriatic Spondylitis-Symptoms, Diagnosis, And More

3Possible Complications of Psoriatic Spondylitis

The underlying inflammation caused by psoriatic spondylitis may result in permanent damages to the joints. If left untreated, this would also result in serious complications when bones in the spine are fused together. These include reduced mobility, permanent hunched-over posture, decreased flexibility, and increased pain and stiffness. Psoriatic spondylitis may also cause other possible complications that affect other parts of the body, such as heart inflammation, inflammatory bowel disease, spinal fractures, osteoporosis in the spine, or uveitis, a form of inflammation that affects the eye. Causes of Psoriatic Spondylitis

The exact causes of psoriatic spondylitis are still not fully understood. Scientists believe that several infections, especially strep throat, may cause the immune system to overreact and attack healthy cells in the body. This leads to inflammation and triggers psoriatic spondylitis. Nevertheless, this is not a contagious disease. It tends to run in families. A major risk factor for psoriatic spondylitis is the gene called HLA-B27, which is also associated with other autoimmune conditions. A blood test can help identify the presence of the HLA-B27 gene. However, getting a positive result does not necessarily mean that you may get psoriatic spondylitis in the future. Other genetic factors may increase the risk of this condition as well. Another risk factor is age. Psoriatic spondylitis is more common in people from 30 to 50 years old. [4]
