Abnormal genes are the main cause of polycystic kidney disease. This means that the condition mostly runs in families. In some rare cases, however, a genetic mutation would happen spontaneously, so that both parents have no copy of the mutated gene. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease only requires either mother or father has the genetic carrying the disease. On the other hand, when both parents carry abnormal genes and pass on their kids, it would trigger autosomal recessive type. [6]
