2Types of Polycystic Kidney Disease
Polycystic kidney disease can be categorized into three main forms:
– Acquired cystic kidney disease
Unlike other types, acquired cystic kidney disease is not inherited. Instead, it often happens in older people who are on dialysis or have a medical history of kidney issues.
– Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease
The autosomal dominant type is also known as adult polycystic kidney disease. It is the most common form that accounts for around 90 percent of the reported cases. Those people who have a family history would be at a higher risk.
– Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease
This type is much less common than autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. While it is also inherited, both parents must have the genetic factors for the condition.[2]
