What is Fragile X Syndrome (FXS)

5Medical Conditions Associated with Fragile X Syndrome

Premutations may make the inheritance of ragile X syndrome more complicated. In general, individuals with premutations do not have this disorder, and they might not have any medical conditions at all. Nevertheless, they can be more prone to some other health issues. For instance, the risk of fragile X-associated tremor syndrome can be higher. This results in trouble with balance and walking as well as tremor in later stages of life. Females with premutations may be more likely to develop fragile X-linked primary ovarian insufficiency, which leads to early ovarian failure or premature menopause. In addition, premutations would be a concern as they may be passed down to children as full mutations, which subsequently cause fragile X syndrome. [9]

Long-Term Outlook for Fragile X Syndrome

Fragile X syndrome is a chronic disorder that lasts the whole lifetiheme. Due to developmental and intellectual disabilities, people with this condition may face many problems in their social, work, and academic life. However, proper treatment and support can help many people live independently. The long-term outlook tends to be better for women than men as they are less affected by fragile X syndrome. For those with severe symptoms, they might need assistance from family members for daily tasks.  [10]
