Carrying the fragile X gene may increase the risk of different medical conditions. For instance, women with this gene would be more prone to experience premature menopause, meaning that their menopause would begin before the age of 40. For men with the fragile X gene, the risk of fragile X tremor ataxia syndrome can be higher. This disorder would lead to a tremor that becomes worse over time as well as walking and balance issues. In addition, male carriers would be more susceptible to dementia. [3]

Nervous System and Brain Symptoms of Fragile X Syndrome

Intellectual disabilities and developmental issues are the main symptoms of fragile X syndrome. For instance, children with this disorder would learn to walk or talk at a much later stages in life than usual. It is estimated that around 25 percent of women and 85 percent of men with fragile X syndrome have intellectual disabilities. The disease is also characterized by behavioral problems, such as aggressive and self-harm behaviors, social avoidance, anxiety, hyperactivity, and attention issues.  [4]
