Also called tinea unguium, onychomycosis is a fungal infection that affects the nails. It is typically mistaken for nail psoriasis due to similar symptoms, such as abnormal dents and ridges as well as lifting, crumbling, and thickening nail plate. The first clue to differentiate these two conditions is the affected area. Onychomycosis is a nail disorder that only appears on the nails. On the other hand, psoriasis may cause skin plaques on other parts of the body. Your doctor may also take a sample from your nails and examine under the microscope to make a diagnosis. If the sign of fungal spores cannot be found, then psoriasis may be the possible cause. [6]
