Another cause of cardiac arrhythmias or irregular heartbeats can be metabolic disorders. These are conditions that can affect the levels of blood acidity or serum electrolytes in the body. They are most commonly reported in those patients with diabetes, kidney disease, acute illness, dehydration, or are taking medications, especially diuretics. The metabolic and electrolyte disorders that are linked to irregular heartbeats include too alkaline blood or alkalosis, too acidic blood or acidosis, low calcium level or hypocalcemia, low magnesium level or hypomagnesemia, high potassium level or hyperkalemia, as well as low potassium level or hypokalemia.
