The Heart’s Electrical System
Before diving deep into the causes of ventricular tachycardia, it is good to understand how the electrical system in the heart works. In general, there are 4 chambers in our heart: two ventricles (lower chambers) and two atria (upper chambers). The heartbeat is typically regulated by the sinus node, which generates electrical impulses to start a heartbeat.
Electrical impulses travel from the sinus node to trigger the atrial muscles to pump blood into the ventricles. After that, they arrive at the atrioventricular node, which slows down and sends an electrical signal to the ventricles. When the signals reach the ventricles, they start to pump blood to other body parts. Anything that affects this complicated process may cause ventricular tachycardia and other heart issues.
