Typical Symptoms of Lockjaw

4Increased Blood Pressure and Rapid Heart Rate

Another common sign of lockjaw is increased blood pressure or hypertension. This may be associated with rapid heart rate and other effects of the bacteria on the central nervous system. When the heart is beating faster, more blood passes through the vessels and increases the pressure. Normally, it is hard to notice any mild changes in blood pressure. But if left untreated in the long run, it would cause damage to your organs and blood vessels. [6]

The bacteria Clostridium tetani that causes lockjaw may produce a toxin, which affects the activities of your nervous system and brain. This neurotoxin can interfere with nerves controlling your heart operation. As a result, many people with the condition may feel faster heart rate. The symptom tends to occur around 3 to 10 days after the initial infection. Nevertheless, the exact period can vary from person to person. In general, the incubation period may be longer if the affected area is further from the central nervous system. [7]
