Tourette’s Syndrome Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

13Deep Brain Stimulation

In more severe cases of Tourette’s syndrome, deep brain stimulation or DBS can be used to deal with serious tics. This procedure typically involves the placement of a battery-operated device that would electrically stimulate a targeted area of the brain. This part is responsible for controlling movements. Alternative, the doctor might also add electrical wires into the brain to transmit electrical stimuli to these regions. This can be helpful in those situations with tics that are very hard to treat. While this is a safe method that requires a carefully planned and complicated surgical procedure, you should consult your doctor about the possible benefits and risks before starting. DBS can also be used for some other neurological issues, such as Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. [13]
