Many foods that contain caffeine and monosodium glutamate (MSG) would trigger a tension headache. The exact mechanism is still unclear. However, it is better to limit the consumption of those foods to minimize the risk. These include cheese, chocolate, dairy products, onions, peanut butter, nuts. Foods with amino acid tyramine such as chicken livers, smoked fish, aged cheese, or red wine can also cause the same effects.
