9Recovery from Stem Cell Transplants
After a stem cell transplant, you may need to stay in the hospital for a few weeks until you fully recover. Some procedures can be performed as an outpatient process, but you will still have to go to the hospital daily in a few weeks for follow-up care. During recovery, the transplanted stem cells will start to settle in and develop into new blood cells. Certain options may be suggested to aid in this process, such as blood transfusions, antimicrobial drugs, blood tests, and isolation. It would take a round 6 to 12 months for a full recovery. You also need maintenance therapy during this period to keep cancerous cells in remission and prevent a possible relapse in the future.[10]
