People with spinal muscular atrophy might have some further complications that require medical attention. Infected pressure sores or respiratory infections would cause a mild to severe fever. If can also cause a non-healing ulcer or wound that can become infected or worse if left untreated. Severe cases of constipation can lead to abdominal pain or cramps. Recurrent coughing would indicate that you are suffering from aspiration, which can be caused when saliva or food is lodged in your lungs. Other effects include difficulty swallowing or eating, weakening muscles, leg or arm puffiness, and aspiration pneumonia. [3]
